I was just thinking about how i got into custom cars, and like many it was through magazines. For me it was june 1986 issue of street machine with gordon jones chevy powered mini van on the cover.
I remember seeing it on the shelves as a 9 year old, flicking through it and just thinking what an amazing car!
How many others got into the custom and rod scene the same way and what cars converted you?
cheers. paul

Definitely CC in my schooldays (got me into bare chested ladies too). Lot of cars did it for me at the time but notably Terry Gibbs' Black Magic Camaro, Mick Cooke's Silhouette Camaro and, er St Louis Blues, another Camaro, this time a second gen.

Used to go in Southend Talza Arcade with my Bro Pete. There was a bookshop called Bobins. That was about 1958/9 in there was some great mags [no not those] but Carcraft, Hot Rod, Rod and Custom i was hooked. Oppisite was a model shop and low and behold there was model kits of the same sort of cars. Monagram. AMT etc. Its a drug only the best type.

Hot Rod....used to walk around to a paper shop in Paddington under strict instructions from my mum, not to stop, very dodgy area she said, for my monthly fix. Must've been 10 or 11 I guess.... Got into slot-car racing, and then racing was in my blood....I remember buying the first CC....managed to get our local shop to get that one, he used to keep it under the counter cos of the tits....
It was Vantastic, the first Steve Stringer van, in CC that got me into vans, then I had to get 'Truckin' too...
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.....:shake:

I was probably around 15 or so when my mother went to a local Scouts jumble sale and bought me home some late 50's American car mags uncluding Hot Rod, Car Craft and others - that (as others have said) was the downhill run. One readers car photo that remained mentally with me was a custom chopped and channeled '57 Pymouth coupe with extended rear fins and a cabin height about the same as my Vette - 'Christine' wouldn't have been a patch on this:tup:

My Dad had just bought an FD Victor, we were visiting my Uncle who gave me a copy of the September '75 Custom Car with Clive Skiltons VX4/90 Funny car on the cover with Susie Shaw. I couldn't believe my Dad was letting me look at a magazine with nudie ladies in it considering I was only 12.

I was working a Summer job in Woolacombe and needed something to read on the bus back home so bought Street Machine. It was around April 1984/5 and was a V8 special issue with a red chopped & 2 doored Corsair and a black Mk2 Cortina on it.
Always ben into cars and bikes, but this made me love customs.

Purchased the first Street Machine Magazine (Henry Hi-rise) in 79 at the ripe old age of 15. Got hooked on the custom/street machine style of cars and have been ever since. Supplemented my magazine addiction with Hot Car, Custom Car, Hot Rod and Custom and various other car based magazines during the 80's. I have now managed my addiction and no longer purchase custom/hot rod magazines although I will occasionally leaf through Custom Car during my visits to the local WH Smiths. I am not totaly clean as I do purchase Classic Ford which seems to feature more and more mildly customised Fords from the 60's - 80's. :smoke:

Street Machine
then Hot Rod & Custom.

Never was a fan of Custom Car, which ironically is the only survivor so I obviously got something wrong!
