Sounds like the spigot may be rusted in the end of the crank. Try shooting some rustoff or similar down to that area. Turn it and do the same again. Let it soak for a day. I know this is obvious but have you checked that you have all the bolts out?? I know its insulting but check anyway. very easy to miss one but there again if you have 4 then that should be it.
Sometimes they can stick like hell. Just remember when you put it back the converter should be in the trans before you offer it up to the engine.

Sure enough it was rusted on, soaked it over night.
I wedged some wood behind the flex plate to stop it bending, then hammered in wedges behind torque converter.
It took a bit of force and jumped about a foot when it went.
